Development of waterway transport in Ho Chi Minh

Although there are many advantages, due to lack of investment over many years, waterway transport system in Ho Chi Minh City is not promoting this advantage. To share overload of the road transport, Transport & Traffic Department of HCM City are processing tests to develop waterway transportation.

Ho Chi Minh City has dense system of rivers, canals, with nearly eight thousand kilometers in length, surface area of water is about 16% of the city area. In particular, many rivers and canals such as Te channel, Tau Hu channel, Tan Hoa canal - Lo Gom ... very favorable to develop waterway transportation and tourism. At one time, the main trading activities of people with Cho Lon area Saigon Gia Dinh mainly by waterway transport. Crowded boatsselling – buying”, many large channel systems also are gateways connecting Saigon - Gia Dinh with surrounding areas to service activity exchanges & commodity transportation. Currently, the system of ports and inland terminals, the city has about 320 ports, wharves in which have four major ports as Saigon, New Port, Ben Nghe and Nha Be. Particularly, Saigon Port is one of the largest ports on cargo container capacity. There are more than 50 large and small wharves which have qualified enough to develop passenger transport services. Ships and boats of 20 tons or more also are allowed to pass-by easily on the rivers of the city. These advantages of city are more convenient many times than Mekong Delta provinces. Ho Chi Minh City also has a network of rich inland waterway. If this potential is planned and rational investment will help reduce the overload of current road traffic.

Bus boat fare expected VND 15,000 per ticket

August 5th, Mr. Nguyen Kim Toan, Director of Daily Company (unit assigned to plan of public passenger transport by waterway in HCMC) said:


The company is planning details of the pilot project opening two bus boat routes along the Saigon River and the Tau Hu-Ben Nghe canal.


As proposed, the route of the first line from Linh Dong-Binh Quoi-Hiep Binh Chanh-Tam Vu-Thanh Da-Thao Dien-Ung Van Khiem-Tran Nao-Nguyen Huu Canh-Bach Dang. This line needs to build eight terminals along the Saigon River. To exploit, we need build four multi-functional piers, eight stations, eight ships of which can carry capacity of 80 passengers per ship ... with total investment capital of VND 58 billion. Daily Company recommends the City’s support VND 12 billion to build eight stations along two routes. The route of second line runs along Tau Hu-Ben Nghe canal, the starting point is from Bach Dang Wharf passing through Districts 4, 5, 6 and 8.

According to Mr. Toan’s idea, these two lines are capable of carrying about 10,000 passengers per day. Ticket prices proposed VND15,000 per passenger. It is estimated for the time from starting point to ending point (including stopped time) about 30 minutes. If the two pilot routes operate efficiently, the city will open new lines such as Bach Dang-Te canal-Phu My Hung; Mieu Noi-Binh Loi-Fatima-Binh Trieu-Thanh-Da-Thao Dien; route linking Ho Chi Minh City with Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Long An…

City approves plans for waterway commuter services

HCMC – The HCMC government on Tuesday approved a proposal to launch two waterway commuter routes linking Bach Dang Wharf with the outskirts to ease road traffic congestion in the city.

 

Under the proposal submitted by Thuong Nhat Co. Ltd., the company will launch a route linking the city center with the outlying district of Thu Duc, and another branching out to District 8, both routes stretching 11km each.

The first route will start from Bach Dang Wharf and end in Linh Dong Wharf in Thu Duc, while the other one, also starting at Bach Dang Wharf, will transport commuters via Ben Nghe and Tau Hu canals before ending at Lo Gom Bridge. Both routes will only be launched on a trial basis, said an official from the city government’s Administration Office.

In its study sent to the city’s Department of Transport, Thuong Nhat Company said the two routes have a medium length, but the waterway transport will cut the traveling time by two-thirds compared to bus service.

It will take only half an hour for a commuter boat to cover the whole route, inclusive of the time for passengers to get on board and to disembark, the company said in its study.

Ho Chi Minh City: To entrust enterprise with pilot implementation two "buses" on the river

After more than two months since Daily Co., Ltd had submitted "The project to build two routes public passenger transportation by waterway", City People's Committee has approved this policy for this company studies & implement pilot project; Department of Transportation & Traffic has presided and coordinated with other departments - People's Committee of Districts concerned to consider the evaluation of the project before submitting decision of City People’s Committee.


Daily Company recommends building two pilot bus routes along Saigon River linking two points Linh Dong (Thu Duc) and Bach Dang Wharf (District 1) and the route along Ben Nghe, Tau Hu canal linking District 8 with Bach Dang Wharf (District 1). Each route is 11km in length.

Under this project, the total of expenses for first stage is about VND 58 billion of which VND 28 billion to buy 80 boats, 80 seats per boat, VND 30 billion to build four multi-functional terminals and eight stations. The Company will buy boats & build four multi-functional piers and recommend City’s support to build 08 stations along two routes (about VND 12 billion).

As the expectation, each 15 minutes, one boat will depart during rush hours and can stretch in low hours. These two bus lines are capable of transporting about 10,000 passengers per day.

Proposed fare is VND 15,000 per ticket, higher than road bus from 3-5 times, but the time just by 2 /3 compared with road buses and traffic jams. Including stopped time to pick passenger up, just 30 minutes from two suburban cities (Thu Duc, District 8) to city center (District 1). If the two pilot lines has satisfactory effect, the company will proceed the stage 2, building of new lines such as Bach Dang-Te Canal-Phu My Hung; Mieu Noi-Binh Loi-Fatima-Binh Trieu-Thanh Da-Thao Dien; routes linking Ho Chi Minh with neighboring provinces such as Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Long An ...
