Opening 02 bus routes by waterway surrounded in inner Ho Chi Minh City

Two river bus routes, each route is 11km length with the travel time of 30 minutes by 8 ships ... has just been submitted to City People's Committee by Daily Company (Daily Express).

Road transport in Ho Chi Minh City is becoming overloaded, while the waterway system of tangled canals, rivers which leave them open. Facing the urgent situation need to invest form of river bus to save the road, Daily Company (Daily Express) was selected to study the project.

Routes building waterway transportation systems suggested by Daily Company: Stage 1 investment pilot in a focus on inner city routes. Later stage expansion and development link the whole HCM City, belts, connecting with other towns such as Long An, Thu Dau Mot, Nhon Trach, Bien Hoa, Vung Tau ...

In the pilot stage, the investors offer two routes. The route 1 has a length of 11 km toward Linh Dong – Thu Duc - Binh Quoi - Hiep Binh Chanh - Tam Vu - Thanh Da - Thao Dien - Ung Van Khiem - Tran Nao - Nguyen Huu Canh – Bach Dang. The route 2 has a length similar to along Ben Nghe canal - Tau Hu associated with a road line District 1 - District 4 - District 5 - District 6 - District 8.

Running time of boat about 17 minutes, picking up/ dropping guests at each wharf approximately 1.5 to 2 minutes per station, total time to go through the route about 30 minutes. Each 15 minutes in rush hours, one by one trip will depart and can stretch in the low rush hours of day.

Principal investor expected to exploit each route is the four ships of which has 80 seats per ship (worth about VND 3.5 billion for each one). The project also has set out in the first stage will have 04 multi-purposed terminals (including the disembarkation/ embarkation piers, executive office and other business categories) and 12 stations to picking up/ dropping guests (with parking area with low cost or possibly free).

The total investment value is approximately VND 58 billion (VND 46 billion of business and VND 12 billion of government to build 12 stations). In this research project, Daily Company expects that will have about 116 trips every day. Investor hopes the number of passengers will reach 70% of the seats on board.

 

On that basis, the fare is expected about VND 15,000 per passenger for a full itinerary. River bus not only pull people in traffic but also a means of transport attracting a large number of tourists.

"In the big cities like London, Paris, Bangkok, about 50% of tourists of total of people use this transport. We expect that tourists come to HCM City to go sightseeing on Saigon River about 30 %, the remaining 70% are in traffic", the principal investor's report stated clearly.

Before the latest research for river buses, Daily Company (Daily Express) is also proposed to become the unique investor of this type of traffic in 15 years. On the other hand, businesses also proposed the support oil subsidies if oil prices rise more than 10%. In HCMC, the fare can only be decided as soon as through the People Council.

Advantages and disadvantages of HCM City if implementing river bus:

The total of waterway length can be exploited is 975 km, high-density area, existing routes may go outside toward four directions East - North - West - South by waterway. Specifically, the East is along Saigon River connecting system of Dong Nai river. The Western is Doi channel - Te canal connecting Cho Dem river - Ben Luc - Long An - the Mekong Delta provinces. The North has Saigon River, Thay Cai channel - Tra canal. The Southern is Te channel, Ong Lon canal ... to Cho Gao canal.

Route of Te canal – Doi canal and Ong Lon canal; the bridges have the clearance from 5m to 5.5 m in length. Saigon River flow well with common width is 90m, 5m depth, but the clearance of Phu Long bridge and Binh Loi bridge only from 1.8m to 2m. Xang Canal, An Ha bridge, Tra canal have average conditions for circulation, a minimum depth more than 1m to 2m. The tide disparities is rather high, about 3m.
