HCM City Department of Transportation & Traffic is considering the project two river bus routes
Daily Company (Daily Express) has just submitted officially to HCM City Department of Transportation & Traffic the project for building two routes of public passenger transport by waterways. The development of river bus is considered as the positive option for reducing road traffic load, which are seriously overloaded.

Traveling 11km takes 30 minutes
Under the project, the route of No.1 line: Linh Dong - Binh Quoi - Hiep Binh Chanh - Tam Vu - Thanh Da - Thao Dien - Ung Van Khiem - Tran Nao - Nguyen Huu Canh - Bach Dang and No. 2 line: Ben Nghe – Tau Hu (Bach Dang Wharf - District 4 - District 5 - District 6 - District 8). Based on the route of the first line can be seen, this route runs along Saigon River, the transportation routes of level 1 which is quite suitable for the operation of ships with large capacity. According to research, the first route about 11km in length, 8 stations along the route, it takes 45 seconds for every time to stop picking passenger up.
Also calculation of the total travelling time is approximately 30 minutes on the entire route. Obstacle in implementing the first route is Kinh Thanh Da bridge and Rach Dia bridge which has the clearance of bridge rather low (approximately 2m). Currently, the Traffic Management Zone No. 1 is implementing the upgrade Kinh Thanh Da bridge; so, the "trouble" of No.1 line can be solved. The channel of No.2 line is relatively smaller than the No.1 line; therefore only use the average ships with 80 seats per ship.
Route of this line is nearly 11 km length with 5 terminals, the disembarkation/ embarkation of passengers takes about 2 minutes, total travelling time of entire line nearly 30 minutes. In the long time, this route has been planned by the city as urban drainage line and city landscape combined with inland waterway transport (bus boat inner city). According to Daily Company, first as a pilot only two lines, if the performance is satisfactory, to be going to proceed stage 2. At that time, the new route will be formed as route Mieu Noi- Binh Loi - Fatima - Binh Trieu - Thanh Da - Thao Dien; Bach Dang – Te canal - Phu My Hung and the route connecting with provinces such as Long An, Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Ba Ria - Vung Tau...
The ticket price will be higher than bus fares 4 to 5 times
HCM City has plenty of advantages to develop river transport. The total length of waterway transport can be exploited up to 975 km. Relatively favorable routes of the four directions East - West - South - North, connecting with the provinces of East and the Southwest. |
In stage 1, immediate investment for 80 seat-ship for both routes. Each route will have four ships (cost VND 3.5 billion/ ship). Every 15 minutes of rush hour, there will departure a ship (from 7:00 – 8:30, from 16:30 – 18:00) and stretch in low rush hour. After calculating costs, Daily Company has proposed VND 15,000/ ticket for full transport route, higher than bus fare 4 to 5 times. Therefore, the river bus focuses on passenger class who has income above average; mainly companies have offices in the center of city. It is expected the people join traffic about 70%, the rest are tourists.
Terminal problem is considered the most important and most difficult in this project. Daily Company said that in early stage investment just four multi-purposed terminals and 12 stations along the route. The placement of multi-functional terminals are also "dotted" in particular, located on Ton Duc Thang Street (District 1), the area of Saigon Pearl on Nguyen Huu Canh (Binh Thanh District), Road No. 20, Binh An Ward (District 2) and Route No.18 - Quarter 3 - Hiep Binh Chanh Ward (Thu Duc District). The investment cost for four terminals is approximately VND 18 billion (each station requires approximately 2000 m2 of land), 12 small landings about VND 12 billion.
Because tidal amplitude in the city is quite large (maximum 3m), multi-functional terminals and small stations will be designed in the form of two bridges leading (one up one down), floats located approximately 7-10m from shore. Fund land along Ben Nghe channel – Tau Hu is limited; therefore, the small stations would be studies to build as form of tubular, not to seize the transport stream, the most important is placed in locations connected to the road transport system. Two routes of operation of boat are not affected by waves fluctuations due to embankments along two routes has been completed.

Total of investment capital for both river bus routes expected minimum of about VND 58 billion, of which Daily Company invests ships and multi-functional terminals with a total of VND 46 billion capital, the rest invested by the City. In addition, investors also recommend the City support fuel difference in the form of oil subsidy for each operation ship, long-term land lease, tax exemption for first 5 years ... Currently, Department of Transportation & Traffic is considering this proposal to submit City People's Committee in the near future.
